The Auckland Festival of Photography - 'Social Light'

The New Zealand Steel Gallery was proud to be a part of the prestigious Auckland Photography Festival during 2009.

The Auckland Photography festival is a massive undertaking. Galleries from Rodney to Pukekohe feature work from acclaimed artists for the three week duration of the event.  We are pleased that we had such an incredible line-up to represent Franklin in this event.  The four artists exhibiting were all female and they collectively commented on the depiction of women in Fashion and Magazines in a show called “Social Light”.

‘Social Light’ was very focused on creating dialogue about what is real and what is fantasy, and also what we absorb through advertising messages.  All of the artists contributed incredible pieces; Robyn Hoonhout’s work was placed in and around Bookinopolis, one piece being a very large lit billboard entitled ‘The politics of aging.’   Hannah Richards is a fashion photographer whose work explores vanity and the ability of the fashion industry to present to us what we want to see, even if it isn’t reality.  Eleanor Barnard presented the bride on her special day and themes surrounding this topic, which is crucial for many women.  Finally, Sharon Russell had images dealing with the fabrics and textures we allow ourselves to wear in the name of fashion, her work is all about fetish connections the body has with garments and had a good dose of cheeky humour.
